A blade used in paper making or coating comprises a rigid substrate (2) with a single coating (3) on at least one side and designed to make sliding contact with a moving layer (4), the coating (3) being at least 60 microns thick at the thinnest part of its active area and uniform in structure without visible laminations when viewed in a polarised light microscope. Also claimed is making such a blade by projecting the powdered coating material on to the substrate through a supersonic jet of gas produced by combustion, preferably of methane with oxygen.
