Stacked liquid crystal display cell

The display cell consists of chambers separated by thin transparent membranes held in stress by a peripheral adhesive seal and retained at precise spacings by accurately positioned spacers. The thickness of the membrane is such that essentially no parallax exists between the images formed in the separate chambers. The liquid crystal effect can be monostable or multistable controlled through an active matrix, or bistable or multistable controlled through an active or passive matrix. Within the liquid crystal there can be two orthogonal homogeneously aligned nematic guest-host layers
