Stress-free rail production method

The head (1) of the rail is of wear-resistant material, while the foot (4) and web (3) are of conventional rail material. The head, and the foot with web, are hot-rolled separately to give the desired material characteristics. The head is then hardened by spraying with coolant at the running surfaces, after which it and the web are welded together, generating minimum stress in the process. Heat treatment can be used to reduce the wear-resistance of the head at its core and where it is joined to the web, while increasing ductility.
