Compact fluorescent lamp and self-contained series control circuit

A compact fluorescent lamp and its inbuilt series control circuit has a screwcap base (42) which engages with a standard Edison screw socket used for conventional incandescent filament lamps. The control circuit comprises a diode bridge (16) with electrolytic capacitor (18) which together provide a source of smoothed DC for an inverter (22) generating HF via a resonant pair (LR CR) connected to the lamp (10). Two fluorescent envelopes (32, 34) and a connecting section (40) terminate in a housing (36) which also accommodates the coil (LR) and a circular PCB (not shown). The latter carries the remaining control components and acts as a convection screen for thermal protection of the capacitor (18) mounted in the screwcap (42).
