The heater (1) burns a fraction of the fuel (5) pumped (4) from the tank (3) through a filter (17). A branch pipe (9) through a non-return valve (14) and pressure accumulator (13) supplies the burner (10). The remainder of the fuel is either injected (16) at controlled pressure (15) or returned (7) to the tank. The burner supply is metered (8) by a control unit (11) responsive to signals from a pressure transducer (22) and the engine controller (18). The fuel pump is operated by signals from the engine controller and heater control unit via an OR gate (21).
