The present invention relates to a novel type of composite membrane comprising of a polymer membrane comprising a filler with meso- and/or macropores, the preparation of these membranes, the use of membranes in separation methods and the use of said membranes as catalytic membranes. In particular this invention relates to a method for preparing membranes containing a filler having pores in the meso and/or macro region, comprising the steps of: providing a partially polymerized membrane matrix; adding the filler to the partially polymerized membrane matrix; forming a substantially homogenous distribution of the filler in the partially polymerized matrix; casting of the membrane; and curing the membrane.
