摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive polarizing element which can be easily processed by filling a space between substrates with an optically anisotropic material into a laminar state which makes an angle to incident light. SOLUTION: An optically anisotropic material 2 such as a liquid crystal is held between two transparent substrates 1, 1 a so that the interfaces of the material 2 and the substrate 1 are tilted to incident light. When laser light 3 of 650nm wavelength enters the polarizing element, polarized light having a parallel polarizing plane to this paper, namely, P-polarized light 4 transmits straight through the element since the refractive index is equal, while polarized light having a perpendicular polarizing plane to the paper, namely S-polarized light 5 is refracted and outgoes from the position 8μm displaced from the outgoing position of the P-polarized light. Thereby, the incident light is accurately divided into components of different polarizing directions by the polarizing element. The polarizing element can be formed only by filling the space between transparent substrates such as glass supporting bodies with an optically anisotropic material 2 such as a liquid crystal polymer so that the material 2 is tilted to the incident light.
