The circuit has a semiconducting switch (17) connected in series with the magnetic coil (11) which applies a large pulling current to the coil during a defined time interval after the start of a switching signal. A timing element defines the time interval, after which a reduced holding current is applied to the coil . A current limiting resistance (19) is connected in parallel with the switch path of the semiconducting switch, which is switched from the conducting to the locked state by the timing element after the time interval.
