The device has an opening (2) for the insertion of a cartridge (3) contg. a magnetic recording and/or reproduction medium. The shapes of the front and rear ends of the cartridge wrt. the insertion direction are different from each other. The opening has a section (1b) for prevention of insertion of an inverted cartridge; this allows the cartridge to be inserted starting with its front end and prevents insertion of the cartridge starting with its rear end.
