The invention pertains to an overhead crane. To create an overhead crane that does not require a large crew for assembly and disassembly or specially trained and experienced operators and that can be moved into predetermined positions very simply, the invention proposes an overhead crane (1) for constructing buildings (3), in particular single- and multifamily residential structures, characterized in that outside and above the contours of the building, longitudinal supports (7) attached to vertical standards (4) are arranged in a substantially horizontal plane, with parallel bearing surfaces in longitudinal extension for a transverse beam (6) fitted with travelling rollers (8a) at its ends and a hoisting mechanism (5) that travels in its longitudinal direction, and in that the longitudinal supports (7) are height-adjustable to conform to the changing height of the building and extend at least on one side in the longitudinal direction so far out over the contours of the building that building materials, prefabricated members, tools and the like can be taken up from a designated handling site.
