The latch assembly includes a latch member (21) with a first inertia and several gear teeth (41). The member is pivotably mounted about a disc drive base (44) and engages a transducer actuator assembly (27) when the disc is not rotating. The latch member tends to release engagement with the actuator assembly when a rotational shock force is applied to the disc drive. A counter inertia member (28) has gear teeth (40) and is pivotably mounted about the base and is meshably engaged with the gear teeth of the latch member. The gear teeth are rotatably coupled to the latch member. The counter inertia member has a second inertia which inertially counteracts the first inertia of the latch member when the rotational shock force is applied to the disc drive. The counter inertia member negates the tendency of the latch member to release engagement with the actuator assembly. |
