PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording medium showing higher reproducing output of the medium for short recording wavelengths and having good electromagnetic conversion characteristics by specifying the average intensity of a long wavelength component of the surface roughness of a magnetic layer and using a magnetic powder of a specified iron alloy as the magnetic powder. SOLUTION: In this coating type magnetic recording medium, the surface roughness of the coating face of the magnetic layer shows <=1 average intensity for the component between >=20μm and <=80μm wavelength. Moreover, the ferromagnetic powder included in the ferromagnetic layer is a Fe-Co alloy powder containing 6 to 30atm% Co, 1 to 6atm% Y and 10 to 15atm% Al to Fe and having 0.06 to 0.20μm major axial length. The conditions above described are necessary to decrease the modulation noise and to realize high output. In the magnetic recording medium, any binder material usually used for a medium of this kind can be used as a binder with the magnetic powder to constitute the magnetic layer.
