PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To recognize an original size or an original position efficiently with shortest original detection moving scanning by recognizing a size of a placed original or a position of the original based on the detection result of an edge of the original to be sensed and a moving amount of a read section. SOLUTION: Let an original 14 has a size of a1×b1, and a carriage 1 reads an area of L×W. Furthermore, P1-P5 indicate a position of a CCD 13 being a read section. When reading of an original is commanded, the carriage 1 provided with the CCD 13 moves from the position P1 to the position P2 to detect the length b1 of the original. Then the carriage 1 is returned to the position 3 (at optional position of the length b1) and when a carriage 2 moves to the position P4, the carriage 1 is moved, the length a1 of the original is recognized by converting a moving distance from a rotating amount of a pulse motor to drive the carriages 1, 2. When the size a1, b1 of the original is recognized, the carriage 1 is moved simultaneously in main and subscanning directions and restores to the position P5 identical to the position P1 so as to recognize the position of the original.
