The invention relates to a process in which the ion exchange material is subjected at a pressure of 1.3 to 4.0 bar to an acoustic ultrasound oscillation of a frequency of 15-60 kHz at an intensity of at least 3.5 watt/cm<2>. A device is used which includes a reactor (3) comprising a pressure-vessel chamber (7) designed to allow the passage of water and ion exchange material therethrough. At least one ultrasound oscillator (15) operated by an ultrasound generator (16) is provided inside said chamber (7) with the result that the oscillations of said oscillator affect the material flowing therethrough.
