The brake pedal of a road vehicle is pivot mounted (22) onto the end of an actuator element (30) that in normal circumstances is inactive. The pedal is also pinned to the end of the actuator rod (26) of a brake servo cylinder (29) that amplifies the force applied to the pedal. In the event of a vehicle collision the actuator is operated.
