<p>A new supported liquid membrane device and method for chemical separations has a feed compartment (32), one or more stripping compartments (34, 35), and a supported liquid membrane structure (20) situated between the feed compartment (32) and the strip compartments (34, 35). The supported liquid membrane structure (20) contains two membrane support members (22, 24) that form a carrier liquid compartment (36). The carrier liquid compartment (36) serves to replenish lost carrier liquid from the support members (22, 24). A carrier liquid with a dielectric constant of about 20 to about 28 has been found to be particularly effective in providing a stable liquid membrane with a good flux. The use of a temperature gradient across the supported liquid membrane along with various liquid and solution conditioning treatments including species concentration adjustment in the feed solution, carrier liquid, and strip liquid enhances separation flux. A method and device for parallel strip processing is also provided.</p> |
