PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid-state image pickup element which has dissolved the shortage of the dynamic range of signal output accompanying the lowering of amplitude of a reset gate. SOLUTION: A CCD solid-stage image pickup element is composed of an FD (1) 7 at the first stage of floating diffusion constituted in n stages, a reset gate RG (1) 8 where RGϕ1 pulse is applied, a floating diffusion FD (n) 10 at the nth staged and a reset gate RG (n) 11 where RGϕn is applied. Then, even in the case where the amplitude of the reset gate to reset floating diffusion is lowered, the signal charge having overflown at the nth stage can be caught at the n+1th stage, so the shortage of the dynamic range of the signal output in the solid-state image pickup element can be dissolved.
