PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the breakage of a high frequency power source and the flickering and cutoff of discharge. SOLUTION: A lighting system has an exciting coil 2 electromagnetically jointed to discharge formed in a bulb in a for power supply, a high frequency power source 3 to generate high frequency power supplied to the electrodeless discharge lamp 1, a matching circuit 4 for impedance matching, a discharge unstability detecting means to detect the discharge unstable condition of the electrodeless discharge lamp 1 in accordance with a current in or voltage on the exciting coil 2 or the matching circuit 4 and a high frequency power source control means 6 to reduce the output power of the high frequency power source 3 when the electrodeless discharge lamp is in a discharge unstable condition. If the discharge unstable condition of the electrodeless discharge lamp 1 is detected, the output power of the high frequency power source 3 is reduced to cease the discharge unstable condition with the restriction of discharge in the bulb and no change of a status in the bulb.
