The present invention discloses steel for the manufacture of a mechanical piece which can be cut, which chemical composition contains, in weight: C, between 0, 25 percent and 0,75 percent; Si, between 0,2 percent and 1,5 percent; Mn, between 0,1 percent and 2 percent; Ni, between 0 percent and 1 percent; Cr, between 0 percent and 1 percent; Mo, between 0 percent and 1 percent; Cu, between 0 percent and 1 percent; V, between 0 percent and 0,2 percent; S, between 0.02 percent and 0,35 percent; P, between 0,04 percent and 0,2 percent; Al, between 0 percent and 0,005 percent; N, between 0,005 percent and 0,02 percent; eventually, at least an element selected from lead, tellurium and selenium, in an amount lower than 0,1 percent, the remaining being iron and resulting impurities from the manufacturing process, iron being eventually treated with calcium. The invention further refers to the use of the steel produced by the above method for the manufacture of a piece which can be cut and a piece obtained therefrom.
