The method involves feeding cold ambient air or warm air into the induction system depending on load and/or temp. The induction system contains a load regulating power control element which varies the flow cross-section. The downstream air pressure controls the flow of cold air in conjunction with an at least temp. dependent regulator (11). A knock-regulating controller (23) feeds warm air in a first region (B1) of a load/revolution rate characteristic and only cold air in a second region (B2). The temp.-dependent regulator is active only in the first region. Knock regulation is effective in both regions, which are separated by a boundary line (GL) corresp. to a constant air pressure downstream of the power control element.
