A process is disclosed for operating a controller with a programmable memory. The memory is programmed by running a plurality of successive control processes of the memory programming. The process is characterised by a checking step (S1) for checking whether all, several or only certain selected individual control processes of the memory programming to be executed until a given moment have been executed, and by a decision step (S2) during which it is decided, taking into account the check results, whether programming is to be continued by executing further control processes of the memory programming.
