A composite hammer (10) is provided having enhanced vibration dampening characteristics. In one aspect of the invention, the composite hammer (10) includes a handle (14) having an elongated body (30) and a cradle (36) attached to a terminal end of the body. An elastomeric member (23) substantially encapsulates the cradle (36) and at least partially encapsulates the head structure (12) to thereby secure the head structure (12) to said handle (14). In another aspect of the invention, the hammer (10) includes a substantially rigid elongated body (30) having a chamber (39) therein. An elastomeric material filler (23) is positioned within the chamber (39) of the hammer body (30) to thereby enhance the vibration dampening characteristics of said hammer (10).
