The markings (2-7) are formed from prefabricated elements which conform to the respective size ratios, and are rigidly built into corresponding recesses in the road surfaces. The markings are mechanically bonded to the ground, below the road surface and protrude slightly over the surface of the road. The bonding is achieved by studding or a similar connection. Pieces of glass may be embedded in the elements, and the free surfaces of the elements may be roughed and anti-skid. The markings are coated with colouring. The elements are fabricated from recyclable material by cold or hot forming.
