The device has a source disc (20) associated with one of the pedals (11) and a second source disc (40) acted on by a resetting force and combined with the chain wheel for the bicycle chain (50). Sensors (71,72) continuously monitor the relative positions of the two source discs and the velocity of at least one of these discs, for calculating the applied pedal force, used for automatic in-out switching of an auxiliary electric drive motor.
