The switch mechanism has an operating device employing a DC electric motor (55) and a drive transmission cooperating with a motion transfer element (52), coupled to the switch element via a freewheel coupling for initiating the switching movement. The drive transmission may use a planetary drive and a cooperating spline drive with an output spline wheel cooperating with the motion transfer element, provided by a pin extending parallel to the axis of the output spline wheel, cooperating with a switch sleeve (48) having a freewheel coupling slot (51).
