A flowpacking machine comprises a conveyor for advancing a row of spaced products wrapped in a tubular casing, and a closing station for successively sealing the tubular casing between adjacent products. The closing station comprises a pair of toothed rods 24, 34 which are driven in reciprocating counterphase by a pinion 42, and a pair of opposed sealing jaws 18, 20 which are each connected to one of the toothed rods. The connection between at least one jaw and respective toothed rod is linearly adjustable so that the jaws can seal packages of different thicknesses. In a preferred embodiment, the conveyor is horizontal and the lower sealing jaw 20 is releasably connected to its associated toothed rod 34 by means of a toothed wedge 56 which is resiliently biased towards a toothed portion of the lower rod. To set a new package height, the lower jaw is held just below the conveyor level a, the toothed wedge 56 is disengaged from the lower rod, and the pinion 42 is rotated until the upper jaw 18 is just higher than the new package height. The toothed wedge is then re-engaged with the lower toothed rod, and the sealing jaws now meet at a level i which is half the package height above the conveyor. The adjustment of the lower jaw may be made automatically by a control unit. |
