PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the diffraction efficiency of light by improving the orientation state of liquid crystals and to eventually enhance the utilization efficiency of light. SOLUTION: The surface of a first glass substrate 1 on which rugged parts 9 are formed and the surface of a second glass substrate 2 on which a polyimide film 4 is formed are disposed to face each other. The rubbing direction of the polyimide film 4 and the stripe direction (rubbing direction) of the rugged parts 9 are made the same. The two glass substrates 1, 2 are then so laminated that the forward directions of the rubbing directions of both substrates 1, 2 are aligned to the injection direction of the liquid crystals. The liquid crystals are vacuum injected therebetween.
