Hydrocarbons having an olefinic bond are reacted with CO and H2 in the presence of a suspended cobalt catalyst in a first stage, the aldehydes obtained are converted to alcohols in a second stage, fresh catalyst is added in the second stage, and catalyst, after use in the second stage, is recycled to the first stage. The quantity of used catalyst to be removed from the system, which may be 2-10 per cent of the total, may be removed after the first or second stage. A C6-C8 feed from cracked paraffin wax may be mixed with recycled hydrocarbons in a ratio of 3 : 1 and fed with a 25 per cent suspension of used cobalt-kieselguhr in thick oil, and water gas at 200 atmos. through a preheater to the reactor. The product is freed from gases, treated with hydrogen to decompose cobalt carbonyl, and passed to the hydrogenator. Fresh catalyst is added to the feed. The product is separated from gas, and catalyst removed by filtration, 9 per cent being rejected and the remainder made into a paste with thick oil and recycled to the first stage. |
