A formulation and process to produce a pet food or treat that has been reshaped to various sizes and shapes, such as strips, pellets and sheets, from the addition of a number of raw ingredients which are mixed and heated fused together to form a continuous matrix which remains flexible and non-brittle at low moisture contents of 20-40 %, water acivity of 0.30-0.65, and having a low glass transition compound as the major adhesive component of the matrix, thus being stable at a minimum or no packaging atmosphere at room temperature is described. The process is carried out in a twin-screw, self-wiping, corotating and intermeshing extruder. Filler material (1) and hydrocolloid source (2) are fed into a feeding port (5) of the extruder and mixed. The mixture is compressed in zone (17), passed through die (18), deposited on conveyor belt (22), cut by cutter (23) and then packaged or further shaped. |
