The method involves passing several optical waveguides, adjacent each other, through a surrounding coating device (BE) with a predetermined through opening (RO). The longitudinal movement of the waveguides is generated by means of a dragged flow of the fluid coating material (BM). The diameter of the waveguides and/or the location of the waveguides inside the strip conductor (LWB) are determined. The width (B) of the through opening (RO) of the coating device (BE) is varied on the basis of the measured diameter values and/or the degree of centering inside the strip conductor (LWB). The width (B) is varied such that the remaining gap width not covered by waveguides have a constant value even when the diameters of the waveguide vary.
