In an LED display device used in a vehicle with an LED array for a meter on a printed circuit and diffusing light guides facing the LED array an edge-illuminated transparent cover plate 40 has at least a scale mark, a character and/or a sign on its rear surface formed by hollows 41 made by etching or moulding. The hollows can be rectangular, triangular or pentagonal as shown. The plate 40 is edge-illuminated by a further array of LEDs on a printed circuit board.
