A surgical clamping instrument for facilitating the post-operative closure of visceral tissue enables the method of tobacco-pouch suture to be performed. The instrument is inserted via a trocar and incorporates a scissor action, whereby two pivoted (8, 8') clamping cheeks (9, 9'), each provided with an interlocking sawtooth face (12, 20), take up either an open or closed position operated by a lever mechanism attached to the instrument handle (1). A magazine (14) in the interior of the handle (1) contains a pair of needles which conduct the suture filament through separate piercings in the sawtooth (12, 20) faces by action of a plunger (3) concentric with the handle (1). On completion, the tissue is drawn together and the instrument withdrawn.
