Food item (10) formed into soft mass is packaged to form individually wrapped slices by V-folding continuous web (12) of heat sealable thermoplastic as it is advanced to form front and rear sheets, hermetically sealing the open longitudinal side of the web to form a continuous tubular web, inserting the food item into the tubular web, flattening the web to form a continuous slice of the food item between the top and bottom layers of web, and forming hermetic cross-seals across the web at predetermined intervals as it is continuously advanced. The web is cooled after it is flattened before the cross-seals are formed. Pref. the hermetic cross seals are formed using a pair of endless chains (42,44) on which sealing members are disposed, the chains having aligned runs along which the sealing members ride in aligned relationship for a fixed distance and between which the flattened web is introduced. Heat is applied to at least one sealing member of each pair and pressure is applied to them to urge the upper and lower layers of the web together, the applied heat being sufficient to cause permanent sealing. |
