PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform communication by extracting a specified bit for indicating a coding rule in one frame of reception signals, judging the coding rule of the reception signals, performing conversion matched with the coding rule of a present device and performing digital branching in the communication between the devices of the different coding rules. SOLUTION: Received digital multiplex signals (STM-N signals) are inputted to terminating circuits 1 and 2, the terminating circuit 1 outputs a communication byte (E1 or E2) to aμ/A conversion circuit 3 and the terminating circuit 2 terminates an SS bit in an H1 byte, identifies the coding rule A orμand outputs it to theμ/A conversion circuit 3. In theμ/A conversion circuit 3, the output signals of the terminating circuit 1 areμ/A converted when the SS bit is '00' and the output signals of the terminating circuit are outputted to a digital branching circuit 4 as they are when the SS bit is '10'. In the digital branching circuit 4, digital branching is performed along with signals from another direction and output to a decoder 5 is performed. The decoder 5 outputs decoded signals.
