PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure superior corrosion resistance and durability and to improve recording and reproducing characteristics by allowing a magnetic film, a protective film and a lubricant film to satisfy specified thickness conditions. SOLUTION: A magnetic film 2 of metal Co is formed on the front side of a polyethylene terephthalate substrate 1 by diagonal vapor deposition while introducing gaseous oxygen. A diamondlike carbon film as a protective film 3 is formed on the film 3 by an ECR-CVD method using benzene as starting material and a lubricant film 4 is further formed. A back coating film 5 is then formed on the rear side of the substrate 1 to produce a magnetic tape. At this time, the thickness (c) of the magnetic film 2, the thickness (b) of the protective film 3 and the thickness (a) of the lubricant film 4 are set so as to satisfy the conditions of a<b<c and 2.3c<a×b, preferably 2.3c<a×b<6.7c. The thickness (a) is 5-50Å, (b) is 20-300Åand (c) is 500-5,000Å. Superior corrosion resistance and durability are ensured and recording and reproducing characteristics are improved.
