The invention concerns a lintel (1) designed to define the upper limits of openings such as window and/or door apertures in the walls of, in particular, brick-built buildings. The lintel consists of a multiplicity of individual bricks (13) which are arranged flush with each other in a row along the lintel and which each have a bottom plate (14) with at least three spaced parallel plates (15, 16, 17, 18) extending out from the bottom plate essentially at right angles to it. Between the parallel plates are a reinforcement (20, 21) surrounded by concrete (22, 23) or a similar material and extending along the lintel in the longitudinal direction plus an insulating material (19). The insulating material (19) is essentially rigid and projects upwards out over the top of the lintel (1), formed by the ends (15a, 16a, 17a, 18a) of the parallel plates and the free surface (22a, 23a) of the concrete (22, 23), essentially along the whole length (L) of the lintel, by a distance (d). The bed joint is thus divided longitudinally by the projecting insulating material, improving the thermal insulation in the region of the bed joint.
