A process for drying an oxygen-containing organic solvent solution of hydrous magnesium halide which process comprises distilling off water from the solution and contacting the solution before or during the distillation with a potassium compound so that calcium compound impurities are precipitated together with potassium compound and separating the precipitated calcium and potassium compounds from the solution.
