According to the invention, the switching functions, known in conventional branching, of the connection and disconnection of a load during normal operation and during faulty operation are obtained in a simple manner in an electronic branch switching device (1) which is advantageously manufactured using silicon carbide semiconductor switching devices (4), and has voltage-free triggering means (5, 9, 10), means (8, 22) for detection and instantaneous disconnection in the event of a short circuit, protective means (13) for detection and disconnection from overload currents, and means (48) for limiting of overvoltage.
