A helicoidal spring (1) is contained in an assembly comprising a sleeve (3) with a sliding piston (2). The spring is located axially with the piston and exerts opposite forces through its bases (11,13) on the sleeve and the piston. In order to take up horizontal force components and their resultant couple, spherical ball joint (18,23) is connected between the spring base (13) and the piston and sleeve. The ball joint comprises a male joint (18) mounted on the piston rod (17) and a ring (22) having a spherical surface (23) supported on the male joint. The ring is mounted on the spring base by a small annular dish (15) and a wedging piece (24).
