The absorbent article (10) has a fluid holding layer (24) between the fluid impermeable layer (20) and the fluid distribution layer (22). A system to lead off fluids from the distribution layer (22) is at least at the leading (12) and/or trailing (14) section of the absorbent article (10) to the fluid holding layer (24). The article has an additional layer (28) of a proportion of high yield cellulose pulp fibres in an uncreped through air dried (UCTAD) material. The impermeable (20) and/or barrier layers are of polyethylene, polypropylene or their mixtures.
