The movement sensor comprises a reading head (14) which moves over a graduated measurement track (12) which may expand along it's length. The track is solidly connected to a fixed element at one extremity (24) and has a fixed number of graduations (16) along it's length. The reading head (14) is connected to a second element which is mobile and may expand the track (12) by pressure against one extremity (22) which slides in a ratcheted groove (26,28,30) such that it is unable to return from extension. The displacement of the ratcheted extremity enables the graduation size to be determined and the movement of the second element is measured by the reading head (14).
