A metal surface treatment method for treating a material consisting of or coated with copper and/or zinc to provide same with an iridescent surface. According to the method, the metal surface is treated by means of a series of reactions in an aqueous medium with sodium hyposulphite, lead (II) acetate and copper sulphate. The reactions are carried out in any order, the iridescence treatment is applicable to both plain and patterned metal surfaces, and the method enables patterned decorative objects to be achieved. Products produced according to the method are also disclosed.
