Smoothing of X-ray absorption spectra, for detection of prohibited substances

The method is carried out in steps. Three smoothing coefficients (bj where j=1...4) are computed by the scalar multiplication of the X-ray absorption spectrum (y) to be smoothed, with one of at least three orthogonal base vectors (f), the linear combination of which approximately represents the energy dependence of the absorption of X-ray radiation. The photo effect (f1), Compton effect (f2) and detector falsification (f3) are used. Then the smoothed X-ray absorption spectrum (y<*>) is computed by summing the base vectors (fj) weighted with the smoothing coefficients (bj).
