The step is made from a solid slab of wood or stone, and has a self-supporting step profile with a tread, a nosing (3''), and an overhang which is combined with a riser. A worn step (1) can be overlaid with a second profile which extends over its entire width. The profile is made in more than one part from a step profile (7) and a riser profile (5) which is self-supporting, and which has one or more parts with which an end wall region (6) is integrated. The latter and the profiles are made from a thin metal or metallic alloy, which can be deformed, and which is visually acceptable and/or can be combined with concrete or a thin-walled decorative material (8) which is made from wood, natural or artificial stone, or a synthetic or textile material.
