An hydraulic tensioning apparatus comprising an internally screw-threaded collar for screw-threaded engagement with that length of the bolt to be tensioned which protrudes from the associated nut, an externally screw-threaded shank for screw-threaded engagement in an internally screw-threaded bore in the protruding end region of the bolt, and the collar and the shank being movable by one component of an hydraulic piston and cylinder arrangement, the other component of which is fixed in use relative to the surface against which said nut seats. <IMAGE>
