Cosmetic or dermatological composition (I) comprises at least one derivative of dihydroxyacetone (DHA) of formula ROCH2C(O)CH2OR' (II) in a vehicle. R, R' = H (but not both simultaneously) or a 2-25C linear, branched or cyclic, saturated or unsaturated, alkoxycarbonyl or arylalkoxycarbonyl group (optionally hydroxylated and/or comprising a cyclic carbonate or an ether bridge). (I) may additionally contain a compound (III) capable of breaking at least 1 carboxylic ester bond. Also claimed is a container (IV) with at least 2 compartments: one containing (II), the other containing (III) (both in a cosmetically acceptable medium). (II) are new provided that R and R' are not both H or both a 2-phenoxyethyloxycarbonyl group and, when either R or R' = H then the other is not 2-ethyl-3-hydroxyhexyloxycarbonyl, 2-ethylhexyloxycarbonyl, 2-ethylpropyl-oxycarbonyl, 2-phenoxyethyloxycarbonyl or 3-benzyloxy-2-ethylhexyloxycarbonyl.
