The multi-cylinder piston-type i.c. engine has two cylinder groups 2, 3, each having respective exhaust lines 4, 5 which are connected downstream of parallel catalytic converters (cats.) 6, 7. In part-load operation, one cylinder group 3 is shut down. In order to heat the cat. 7 of the shut-down cylinder group 3 to operating temperature within a very short time after transition from part-load to full-load operation without additional sources of heat, at least some of the exhaust gases from line 4 are diverted into line 5 via common pipe section 9 so that exhaust gases pass through cat.7 in direction 18. This can be achieved by opening the exhaust valves and closing the inlet valves of the shut-down cylinder group 3 so that group 3 acts as a vacuum device 11 until cat. 7 reaches its operating temperature. An exhaust gas recirculation 13, fig 4, may connect the exhaust line 5 of the shut-down cylinders 3 to the intake of the firing cylinders 2 via shut-off valve 14. |
