PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To exactly grasp the state of an output device by storing plural pieces of icon information and displaying that icon while changing its display form corresponding to the state information of the output device connected through a line. SOLUTION: An information transfer part 2 at a color printer 1 transmits the state information showing the state of the color printer 1 through the line or a cable to computer equipment 3, and an information transfer part 4 at the computer equipment 3 receives this information. On the other hand, an icon storage part 5 at the computer equipment 3 holds plural pieces of icon data. Then, based on the information received by the information transfer part 4, any one piece of icon data corresponding to the state information of the color printer 1 is selected and extracted out of plural pieces of icon data stored in the icon storage part 5 by an icon selecting part 6 and based on the icon data selected by the icon selecting part 6, a display part 7 displays the icon while changing its display form.
