A storage unit has a number of compartments (3, 5) for the different feed ingredients, which are fed by gravity through a vertical mixing column (10) containing a motor driven mixer. The column has a series of inclined outlet panels down which the mixed feed ration travels to a circular trough (19) equipped with a sensor ring (20) controlling the mixer driver motor's power supply. The storage compartments are for two types, one (5) having adjustable walls which turn about a central pivot (7) to vary the compartment's size, and the other (5) of fixed size but with a variable outlet. The circular trough is in sections with spring loaded bases which are linked to the sensor ring (20), which prevents the trough from being refilled before it has been completely emptied.
