PURPOSE:To readily and efficiently produce the subject phenylbutyric acid which is an important intermediate for medicines by reacting a microorganism of the genus Micrococcus or Paracoccus having specific ability or a treated substance thereof with specific butenoic acid. CONSTITUTION:A microorganism selected from the microorganism group, having the ability to hydrogenate and convert 2-oxo-4-phenyl-3-butenoic acid into 2- oxo-4-phenylbutyric acid and belonging to the genus Micrococcus (e.g. Micrococcus.luteus ATCC 7468) or the genus Paracoccus (e.g. Paracoccus.denitrificans IFO 12442) or a treated substance thereof is reacted with the 2-oxo-4-phenyl-3-butenoic acid to collect the formed objective 2-oxo-4- phenylbutyric acid.
